1st Grade Math Games for the Classroom: Fun, Hands-On Ways to Build Number Sense and a Love of Math

1st Grade Math Games for the Classroom
All of these math games are so much fun!

I’ve been teaching for almost 20 years now and I will be the first one to tell you how much games can change the dynamic of your classroom. If you teach 1st grade, you know that math time can swing from “we’ve got this!” to “wait, what just happened?” in about 30 seconds. That’s why having a collection of ready-to-go, low-prep, and actually-fun math games is such a game changer. These 1st grade math games for the classroom make it easy to practice everything from number recognition and place value to addition, subtraction, and even geometric shapes—all while keeping your young students totally engaged. Whether you need a quick game for small groups, a fun way to review basic math facts, or digital games for centers, this collection has you covered.

And guess what? You’ll get to grab a Free Math Game Sampler filled with printables that match the games in this post! This free math games sampler set is perfect for testing them out with your 1st graders before you grab the full sets of math resources.

When Math Lessons Feel Like a Struggle

Math teachers know the struggle all too well! You’ve planned your math block, printed your worksheets, and practiced the lesson. But halfway through, you can see it—the glazed eyes, the wandering hands, the sudden “bathroom break” epidemic. It’s not that your 1st grade students don’t like math—they just need a fun way to interact with it. Worksheets alone can’t build number sense or solidify subtraction skills. Kids learn best when they’re moving, talking, laughing, and playing—and that’s where math games come in. If you’re looking for new ideas, you’ve come to the right place! You may have introduced math games with Uno cards or a game board, but these educational games below include everything you need to have fun while working on essential skills.

When you add interactive math games into your lesson plans, you’re giving your first graders a chance to:

  • Practice new skills through play
  • Strengthen number sense and place value
  • Build confidence with addition and subtraction problems
  • Have fun while completing math reviews
  • Work collaboratively and develop social-emotional skills (taking turns, cheering on others, etc.)
  • Meet your State’s Standards or Common Core State Standards while having loads of fun

Whether it’s a pair of dice, number cards, or a sheet of paper and pencil, games transform complex problems into memorable learning moments. The use of games in your first grade classroom is truly the best way to keep young children engaged and excited while covering new concepts. Let’s jump in!

1. Number Recognition & Writing to 120

If your first graders are still mastering digit numbers, this set of printable math games helps them identify, write, and order numbers to 120 using hundreds charts, number lines, and missing number puzzles.

Why teachers love it:

  • Differentiated for multiple levels
  • Great for small groups or whole class play
  • Encourages discussion about right and wrong answers
  • Builds math fun right into your centers

2. Seasonal Dice Games: Counting On & Addition

A pair of dice can turn any math lesson into a fun game! This seasonal dice game pack helps 1st graders work on addition problems, counting on, and number sense while practicing fine motor skills and taking turns. I like to slide the pages into dry erase protectors so kids can use them over and over. I typically keep dry erase markers and tissues or soft sponges to use as erasers nearby.

Great for:

  • Math centers or early finishers
  • Practicing the object of the game (highest sum wins!)
  • Quick review sessions

Bonus tip: Use dry erase sleeves so you can reuse them all school year long!

3. Editable Math Card Game

This Editable Math or ELA Card Game is a classroom favorite — complete with colorful cards and friendly competition. You can easily customize it for addition facts, subtraction strategies, or number recognition, making it a great way to review a variety of skills. Although it makes a really fun math game, you can also use it for spelling games or vocabulary practice since the cards are editable. The possibilities are truly endless!

4. Color by Code Math Activities

Who doesn’t love a color by code? These printable games sneak in addition, subtraction, and shape recognition while your students color!

Perfect for independent practice or a calm-down activity that still meets your state’s or Common Core standards.

5. Ice Skating with Paper Plates

This one’s a total hands-on hit! Students “ice skate” across the room with paper plates, calling out numbers, shapes, or math facts as they go. It’s a great game for kinesthetic learners and makes even complex problems feel approachable. Your kids will be begging to go paper plate skating all year!

6. Holiday Task Card Bundle

Keep the fun going year-round with this collection of games designed for every season! Each set is easy to prep, aligned to Common Core State Standards, and ideal for 1st grade students learning different math skills. These include ELA options as well. Sometimes a simple game like the ones included are perfect for giving you time to meet with your small groups.

7. Interactive Math Centers Mega Bundle

This mega bundle is a teacher’s dream: it covers addition, subtraction, number sense, place value, and more. You’ll find printable math games, digital format options, and hands-on activities that can fill your math centers all year long.

I set up an interactive math and writing center each year. Students look at a bulletin board with samples in front of them. This really helps younger students know how to practice math while you meet with small groups. They can choose one of several activities and then pull them from drawers to complete. When they complete one, they can pull a different number and complete another activity. You can read more about my interactive math and writing centers here.

8. Online Math Games & Digital Options

Perfect for online math games or hybrid classrooms, these digital activities let you practice addition, subtraction, and word problems—no prep, no printing. Kids really enjoy these online games. The sets featured here are seasonal so kids can have a great time building first grade math skills. I really love using Boom cards with my students because they are self-checking and kids will know whether or not they arrived at the correct answer. However, you may enjoy using the Google Slides versions more.

Of course, there are also a variety of math apps that can be helpful if you’re looking for additional online games.

9. Number Recognition Puzzles

These puzzles are a fun way to connect ten frames, tally marks, and digit numbers. Students practice matching subtilizing with visual models to numeric representations—a powerful step toward understanding basic math concepts. These interactive games are so much more engaging if you place a magnifying glass nearby. It’s not necessary, but it makes all the difference in how much fun your kids will have. The answers are printed on the cards in a very small font so that the magnifying glasses make the games extra fun. These games are ones that my students choose to do constantly – even during indoor recess!

If you want to save money and have a larger number of puzzles, grab the puzzle bundle — great savings for teachers who want it all in one place!

10. Cup Stacking Math Fun (Addition & Subtraction)

If your students love competition, this cup stacking subtraction game and addition challenge will be a huge hit. The first player to solve correctly and stack their cups wins!

You’ll cover addition facts, subtraction strategies, and problem-solving—all while laughing and cheering. These are my favorite classroom math games. Your kids will happily complete the challenges again and again. We start with the forty 6-cup challenges. Then when they are ready, we move to the 15 cup challenges. You’ll love seeing your students so engaged with first these first grade math games.

I highly recommend getting the bundle. The bundle is packed with phonics skills and math problems. You can practice CVC words, CVCe words, blends, digraphs, opposites, rhyming skills, and so much more!
